Kusongmuqiek Gr

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Changchengian to Qingbaikouan (latest Paleoproterozoic-Tonian) Ch-Qb (2, 3)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Western Tianshan. The Kusongmuqiek Gr was named by the Xinjiang No. 3 Party of Regional Geological Survey in 1963 and published by Xinjiang Compiling Group for Regional Stratigraphic Scale in 1981. The typical section is situated in Kusongmuqiek Mountain (Kuximuqiek Mountain) in Jinghe County to south of Sayram Lake, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region).

Synonym: (库松木切克群), Kuximuqiek Gr, Kusumuqiek Gr (spellings)

Lithology and Thickness

The Kusongmuqiek Gr is subdivided into four formations, from base to top: The Tamuqie Fm (late Changcheng age = late Statherian of latest Paleoproterozoic) is composed of thin-to medium-bedded unitary limestone. The Sangequan Fm (early Jixian age = early Calymmian) is stromatolite-bearing dolomite and marble. The Sitai Fm (Sitaishan Fm; late Jixian age = late Calymmian) consists of limestone, dolomitic limestone and brecciated limestone, carbonaceous limestone. The Songshutou Fm (early Tonian) consists thin-bedded dolomite. [For details, see the entries on the component formations.] It is a thickness of 2500 to 4200 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Dolomitic limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is unconformably overlain by the Sinian tillite of Kulutieliekti Fm (base of Kailakti Gr)

Upper contact

The basal boundary is not exposed.

Regional extent

Western Tianshan. With a wide distribution, the Kusongmuqiek Gr is exposed in west from the south bank of Sayram Lake north of Huocheng County, going eastward along Guozigou, Ertai to south of Wutai and southwest of Jinghe County.

Fossils

The Kusongmuqiek Gr yields abundant stromatolites and microplants. The stromatolites of the lower part are dominated by Kussiella f., Omachtenia f., Cryptozoon f., Gruneria f., and those in the middle part are dominated by Jacutophyton f., Conophyton f., Baicalia f., etc. The upper part yields microplants Trachysphaeridium sp., Pseudozonosphaera sp., Taeniatum sp., Polyporata sp., Pterospermopsimorpha sp., etc.; and the lower part yields Asperatopsophosphaera sp. and Pseudozonosphaera sp.

Age

According to the data of stromatolites and microplants, its age was considered to belong to the Changcheng to Jixian System (latest Paleoproterozoic to early Mesoproterozoic), and then a major hiatus with the upper part of the Songshutou Fm at the top of the Group is inferred to be within the Qingbaikouan System (early Neoproterozoic).
